Sometimes it’s hard to feel motivated to get rid of all your clutter, but if you thought you could swap your unused items for cash, then you might feel a bit more keen on the idea.

There are many ways to do this, so once you’ve sorted out all the items you don’t use, don’t like and don’t need, you can get started.

All That Glitters

If you have gold or silver jewellery that you don’t wear then you could try selling this. There are quite a few websites which offer to buy gold, silver and platinum scrap jewellery, such as hattongardenmetals.com or  cashforyourgold.co.uk, but you can often find a local gold exchange or jewellery shop which will buy them too.

With the price of gold on a high at the moment, your unworn jewellery could be worth more than the space it occupies.

What Are Your Clothes Worth?

We’ve all made catastrophic mistakes when buying clothing and often have items in our wardrobe that we’ve never even worn. In addition our children have a pesky habit of growing out of their clothes long before they wear them out. Take advantage of the good condition of these items and sell them.

You could list them on eBay (remember to charge enough for the postage and pick a free listing day), or sell them at a car boot sale. Alternatively you may be able to find a local shop or market stall that specialises in second hand clothes and sell to them. There are also many website that offer to buy your clothing by the kilo such as cashforclothing.co.uk or clothesbank.co.uk.

Any money you make is a bonus when compared to a wardrobe full of clothes you never wear.

Cash For Collectibles

Some of the clutter you’ve acquired over the years may be worthless to you, but could be sought after by someone else. Examples of this are beanie babies, Pokemon cards, stamps, coins, china and ornaments.

You could try selling your collectibles on eBay (in my experience the oddest things can sell), at a car boot sale, at a specialist auction, or do some research online to see if there are any specialist websites which buy those type of items.

Bookworms and Music Lovers

If you have books you’ve never read and don’t intend to read and music you never listen to, then these are using up your precious space. Try selling them on eBay, Amazon, greenmetropolis.com, webuybooks.co.uk or similar websites. Alternatively you could try selling them at a car boot sale or a second hand book shop (if you can find one, they seem increasingly rare nowadays!)

CDs or DVDs can be flogged on eBay, musicmagpie.co.uk, cashforcds.com, or via CEX shops (or their website at uk.webuy.com).

Mobile Cash

Even your old mobile phone can be turned into dosh. Look up the value of your unused handsets on envirofone.com or mazumamobile.com and see if they’re worth selling.

Excess Furniture and Unexercise Equipment

One of the most noticeable ways to de-clutter is to sell something large, like an item of furniture or an exercise bike. I tend to call gym equipment ‘unexercise ‘equipment, as they so rarely get used for more than a week after purchase! These items could be sold on eBay if the buyer collects, at a car boot sale, a local auction house, or an advert in your local paper. Alternatively you could try a free advert in a newsagent, supermarket, or even your workplace.

Sell, Sell, Sell

Everything that you don’t use is worth selling and you really have nothing to lose by trying it. Bank all the money you make and save up for a holiday, or some other treat that won’t clutter up your home again.

By selling your clutter you are winning twice over. You gain space and money. You’d be a fool not to try it. Go forth and sell!
